This kit is designed as a complete powered system less the spool.  You get everything required to build a quality winch with a CVT transmission providing excellent gear ratio from really short (to get you up and out of the water through to tall to get you up on the plane)

Are you considering a cheap ATV setup to use for your project?  Here are some of the potential pitfalls of using ATV components instead of quality Go Kart components:

 

ATV:  Splined shafts and welded hubs

- Parts are usually cheap chinese components designed for small trikes which aren't designed to go fast and won't withstand the forces your project could endure at times of high demand.

- hard to find replacement parts

- most splined hubs do not fit standard go-kart accessories,

- can't relocate the hubs for placement - you'll need to build your project around the axle

- can't fit alternative sprockets - you're stuck with the sprocket and gear ratio you get and you'll need to hunt down a compatible clutch (if it exists) -  these are often too tall and willl destroy your clutch

- Can't re-size axle shaft - you're stuck with the axle shaft length you get.

 

GO KART:  Standard keyed shaft

- All parts are designed for high speed race use - so they are safe even under the most extreme conditions.

- easy to buy replacement parts,

- hubs fit standard go-kart parts (you can buy them anywhere!)

- easy to change hub locations (position the axle hubs around your project, instead of making your project fit around the axle)

- Fit any go kart sprocket and get your gear ratio right (you'll have full access to many different pitches and sizes)

Expect approximately 2.7:1 initial reduction of your gear ratio upon take-off, then the torque converter will progressively move through to a final drive of approximately 0.90:1 (overdriven) at full speed.  This allows use of taller gearing on the rear without acceleration issues.
