Off road gokart project.

Postby JamesGill » Thu Jun 09, 2016 7:44 am

Few years back a mate showed up to a camping weekend with this. A ratty old Demon X8 (i think?).
Image
It was rough as hell on the dirt, understeered like a pig and had a carby FULL of crap. None the less it was bulk fun! A week after the camping trip was over I scored it off him for $300. Some nagging needed. lol
First thing I did was move the rear axle back behind the motor so the front wheels would hook up. The thing would just drive you into a tree soon as look at you. Change to 13inch rear wheels and wheel barrow wheels on the front. Clean the fuel/mud out of the carby next. The fuel tank was so full of rust and sh!t it went to the bin. Truly amazing it ran at all.

The cb125 motor was a blast but its 6hp was soon making me dream of bigger things. Enter the cheap ass 420cc 16hp Chonda a CPR clutch and front hubs!

To small still bub try next year.

When CPR released belt torque converters I was all over it like a fat kid on a cupcake!
Top speed is about 50kph and wheel spin/drifto fun is easy at any speed. It does kills the torque converter belt if you smash it to long though. Not that I would drive like that? :D

As much as I loved driving the old clunker it was never really going to suit off road work.

I needed a new plan....................

So with the fun I have had in mind when this came up for sale I was somewhat excited to shell out the coin.

118hp 1992 GSXR 750cc motor in a gokart.
At first I was thinking of doing a clone build of the last kart but the lack of suspension and limited safe roll cage options made me soon scrap that plan.
So with a head full of sketchy plans an old seat and a few bits of wood I started. I don't have a pipe bender and coin is short so I did what I could to work out a plan.

Once I had a basic size and shape in my head I figured the rest would come to me as I went (with the help of some dowel). Hehe

So that where things are at so far. A lot of work left so I will update as I can. It was a bit of a big leap for my first tube frame build I know so don't be to hash but advice is very welcome.

Over the last few months I've slowly been pulling together parts as money came to hand. It's been slow going but I'm starting to pull things together.

The front end is still a work in progress but it's starting to look like it may be a goer. Bump steer ended the first gokart steering design plan and the front arms needed to be
shortened as it was to wide to fit on my car trailer. I also gave rear braking the ass for front and rear disk. The cool thing is the rear brake caliper has both a hydraulic and cable option.
Thus cable hand brake FTW! :)

The steering shaft is a mix of Kingchrome socket parts and the old gokart shaft welded together to make a cheap strong uni so the steering wheel is on the right angle. The rack setup has ment that bump steer will not be a problem and should give good steering control.

The shocks are height, spring pre load and gas adjustable. At a later date if needed I can look for something more advanced but for now they should be fine.

Till next update. :)
